A sanitation system that only served a small part of the Kasane and Kazungula communities in northern Botswana, coupled with population growth, had resulted in the already overloaded treatment works overflowing, causing river contamination and health concerns.

Aurecon’s design solution of an innovative vacuum-based sewage collection system has contributed significantly to improved sanitation services. Creating a healthier environment that is less prone to outbreaks of waterborne diseases and more conducive to the growth of tourism in the region.

The system, designed to eventually serve 30 000 people and accommodate the high volumes of visitors to the area, is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.
